The anti-inflammatory effect of various fractions (50 mg/kg) of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis leaves was investigated in carrageenan induced rat paw edema model. Both butanolic and chloroform fraction highly and moderately significantly (P<0.01) inhibited carrageenan induced paw edema model. Phytochemical analysis of butanolic fraction showed presence of tannins, flavonoids and iridoid glycosides and chloroform fraction showed presence of flavonoids and terpanods. The butanolic fraction was found to be more effective than chloroform, pet ether and aqueous fraction. Thus the ant-inflammatory potential of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis leaves may be due to presence of active constituents like flavonoids and iridoid glycosides Present in butanolic fraction and terpenoids in chloroform fraction.
